The Guardians of Earth

Star City, Russia
August 5-9, 2012

The Association of Space Explorers is proud to partner with the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics (MMK), Obedeninie Kosmosom (United by Space), and the Institute for Biomedical Problems in supporting the upcoming The Guardians of the Earth forum in Star City, Russia. ASE hopes to provide travel stipends for deserving students from the 35 ASE member nations who may not otherwise be able to afford to travel to Star City, Russia. Please help us give the next generation a voice in the stewardship and care of our home planet – contribute now!

The forum proposes to bring together delegations from countries around the world to discuss strategies for protecting our planet. It will take place August 5-9, 2012, in time for the opening of the Space Center at the Yuri A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, which will be used for youth projects including competitions and educational programs.

In addition to astronauts, cosmonauts, scholars and representatives of community organizations, the forum invites young adults, ages 14-16, who are active participants in their local communities and who write a qualifying essay or propose a suitable project on one of the forum’s themes:

– Why space exploration is important for Earth’s survival
– Earth as an object of human guardianship
– Space – a place of peace!

– Health of Earthlings – the foundation for a healthy Earth
– How each person can contribute to the betterment of Earth, particularly through intercultural understanding (Who I am, Earth will be)

Also suggested are projects exploring international cooperation in developing commercial space projects.

Forum participants will meet, express their ideas, and together come up with a Code of Conduct for the people of Earth based on mutual respect and respect for our planet.

Student Selection: We recommend that students submit a qualifying essay, video, web page, or interview illuminating their thoughts on any of the topics above, or a drawing to be considered for inclusion in a collection entitled, “The Story of Earth and My Country for People From Other Planets.” They may also or instead submit a proposal for a thoughtful project that can be undertaken on any of the forum’s themes. A list of the student’s current activities, in addition to recommendations from teachers indicating how prepared the student is to participate in an international exchange, are also highly encouraged.

At the forum: Students will present their work and project ideas at the forum. Forum participants will stay in a Russian-style hotel at the Yuri A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. The Russian hosts will facilitate visas. The forum is tentatively scheduled as a five-day program, including about 2 days of talks and interaction for the forum, and 3 days of touring Russian space facilities and Moscow-area historical sites.

Thank you for your interest in helping bring together youngsters from around the world to engage with each other in frank, urgent conversation about our most precious resource: Planet Earth.
