The Association of Space Explorers prepares for Asteroid Day 2020 with an expert panel discussion on asteroids and the threats and opportunities they present to our species. NASA planetary defense experts, a veteran NASA astronaut, a Smithsonian planetary scientist, and top engineers building asteroid detecting telescopes and the first spacecraft to test asteroid deflection discuss the latest progress in defending Earth from a potential destructive impact by a rogue near-Earth object. 

Panelists include:

• Jim Zimbelman, planetary scientist at the National Air & Space Museum

• Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer

• Tom Jones, veteran NASA astronaut and asteroid scientist

• Kelly Fast, program manager for NASA’s NEO Observations Program

• Amy Mainzer, University of Arizona survey director for NASA’s NEO Surveillance Mission
